The Census of Israel’s Warriors
1Then the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 2“Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, every male, head by head 3from twenty years old and upward, whoever is able to go out to war in Israel, you and Aaron shall number them by their armies. 4With you, moreover, there shall be a man of each tribe, each one head of his father’s household. 5These then are the names of the men who shall stand with you: of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur; 6of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai; 7of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab; 8of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar; 9of Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon; 10of the sons of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur; 11of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni; 12of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; 13of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran; 14of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel; 15of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan. 16These are they who were called of the congregation, the leaders of their fathers’ tribes; they were the heads of divisions of Israel.”
17So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, 18and they assembled all the congregation together on the first of the second month. Then they registered by ancestry in their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head, 19just as the Lord had commanded Moses. So he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.
PSALM 147
Praise for Jerusalem’s Restoration and Prosperity.
1Praise the Lord!
For it is good to sing praises to our God;
For it is pleasant and praise is becoming.
2The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
He gathers the outcasts of Israel.
3He heals the brokenhearted
And binds up their wounds.
4He counts the number of the stars;
He gives names to all of them.
5Great is our Lord and abundant in strength;
His understanding is infinite.
6The Lord supports the afflicted;
He brings down the wicked to the ground.
7Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
Sing praises to our God on the lyre,
8Who covers the heavens with clouds,
Who provides rain for the earth,
Who makes grass to grow on the mountains.
9He gives to the beast its food,
And to the young ravens which cry.
10He does not delight in the strength of the horse;
He does not take pleasure in the legs of a man.
11The Lord favors those who fear Him,
Those who wait for His lovingkindness.
The Seventy Sent Out
1Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. 2And He was saying to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3Go; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4Carry no money belt, no bag, no shoes; and greet no one on the way. 5Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’ 6If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. 7Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they give you; for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house. 8Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you; 9and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11‘Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet be sure of this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12I say to you, it will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city.
13“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had been performed in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you. 15And you, Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will be brought down to Hades!
16“The one who listens to you listens to Me, and the one who rejects you rejects Me; and he who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”
21At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. 22All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”
23Turning to the disciples, He said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see, 24for I say to you, that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them.”
25And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?” 27And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” 28And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.” 29But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
The Good Samaritan
30Jesus replied and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. 31And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, 34and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.’ 36Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?” 37And he said, “The one who showed mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do the same.”
Martha and Mary
38Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. 39She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. 40But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.” 41But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; 42but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
1) Why does יהוה number His people?
2) How does counting express both order and care?
3) What parallels exist between Israel’s army and Yeshua’s sent ones?
Job Asserts His Integrity
1“I have made a covenant with my eyes;
How then could I gaze at a virgin?
2And what is the portion of God from above
Or the heritage of the Almighty from on high?
3Is it not calamity to the unjust
And disaster to those who work iniquity?
4Does He not see my ways
And number all my steps?
5“If I have walked with falsehood,
And my foot has hastened after deceit,
6Let Him weigh me with accurate scales,
And let God know my integrity.
7If my step has turned from the way,
Or my heart followed my eyes,
Or if any spot has stuck to my hands,
8Let me sow and another eat,
And let my crops be uprooted.
9“If my heart has been enticed by a woman,
Or I have lurked at my neighbor’s doorway,
10May my wife grind for another,
And let others kneel down over her.
11For that would be a lustful crime;
Moreover, it would be an iniquity punishable by judges.
12For it would be fire that consumes to Abaddon,
And would uproot all my increase.
13“If I have despised the claim of my male or female slaves
When they filed a complaint against me,
14What then could I do when God arises?
And when He calls me to account, what will I answer Him?
15Did not He who made me in the womb make him,
And the same one fashion us in the womb?
16“If I have kept the poor from their desire,
Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,
17Or have eaten my morsel alone,
And the orphan has not shared it
18(But from my youth he grew up with me as with a father,
And from infancy I guided her),
19If I have seen anyone perish for lack of clothing,
Or that the needy had no covering,
20If his loins have not thanked me,
And if he has not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep,
21If I have lifted up my hand against the orphan,
Because I saw I had support in the gate,
22Let my shoulder fall from the socket,
And my arm be broken off at the elbow.
23For calamity from God is a terror to me,
And because of His majesty I can do nothing.
24“If I have put my confidence in gold,
And called fine gold my trust,
25If I have gloated because my wealth was great,
And because my hand had secured so much;
26If I have looked at the sun when it shone
Or the moon going in splendor,
27And my heart became secretly enticed,
And my hand threw a kiss from my mouth,
28That too would have been an iniquity calling for judgment,
For I would have denied God above.
29“Have I rejoiced at the extinction of my enemy,
Or exulted when evil befell him?
30No, I have not allowed my mouth to sin
By asking for his life in a curse.
31Have the men of my tent not said,
‘Who can find one who has not been satisfied with his meat’?
32The alien has not lodged outside,
For I have opened my doors to the traveler.
33Have I covered my transgressions like Adam,
By hiding my iniquity in my bosom,
34Because I feared the great multitude,
And the contempt of families terrified me,
And kept silent and did not go out of doors?
35Oh that I had one to hear me!
Behold, here is my signature;
Let the Almighty answer me!
And the indictment which my adversary has written,
36Surely I would carry it on my shoulder,
I would bind it to myself like a crown.
37I would declare to Him the number of my steps;
Like a prince I would approach Him.
38“If my land cries out against me,
And its furrows weep together;
39If I have eaten its fruit without money,
Or have caused its owners to lose their lives,
40Let briars grow instead of wheat,
And stinkweed instead of barley.”
The words of Job are ended.
12Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!
Praise your God, O Zion!
13For He has strengthened the bars of your gates;
He has blessed your sons within you.
14He makes peace in your borders;
He satisfies you with the finest of the wheat.
15He sends forth His command to the earth;
His word runs very swiftly.
16He gives snow like wool;
He scatters the frost like ashes.
17He casts forth His ice as fragments;
Who can stand before His cold?
18He sends forth His word and melts them;
He causes His wind to blow and the waters to flow.
19He declares His words to Jacob,
His statutes and His ordinances to Israel.
20He has not dealt thus with any nation;
And as for His ordinances, they have not known them.
Praise the Lord!
45But they did not understand this statement, and it was concealed from them so that they would not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this statement.
The Test of Greatness
46An argument started among them as to which of them might be the greatest. 47But Jesus, knowing what they were thinking in their heart, took a child and stood him by His side, 48and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.”
49John answered and said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us.” 50But Jesus said to him, “Do not hinder him; for he who is not against you is for you.”
51When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem; 52and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him. 53But they did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem. 54When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55But He turned and rebuked them, [and said, “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of; 56for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.”] And they went on to another village.
