Noach (Noah) - Day 3
Torah Tapestry Threads - October 21

Genesis 8:1-22

The Flood Subsides

1But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark; and God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided. 2Also the fountains of the deep and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the rain from the sky was restrained; 3and the water receded steadily from the earth, and at the end of one hundred and fifty days the water decreased. 4In the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat. 5The water decreased steadily until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains became visible.

6Then it came about at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made; 7and he sent out a raven, and it flew here and there until the water was dried up from the earth. 8Then he sent out a dove from him, to see if the water was abated from the face of the land; 9but the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, so she returned to him into the ark, for the water was on the surface of all the earth. Then he put out his hand and took her, and brought her into the ark to himself. 10So he waited yet another seven days; and again he sent out the dove from the ark. 11The dove came to him toward evening, and behold, in her beak was a freshly picked olive leaf. So Noah knew that the water was abated from the earth. 12Then he waited yet another seven days, and sent out the dove; but she did not return to him again.

13Now it came about in the six hundred and first year, in the first month, on the first of the month, the water was dried up from the earth. Then Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and behold, the surface of the ground was dried up. 14In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry. 15Then God spoke to Noah, saying, 16“Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. 17Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you, birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, that they may breed abundantly on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.” 18So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him. 19Every beast, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out by their families from the ark.

20Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21The Lord smelled the soothing aroma; and the Lord said to Himself, “I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.

22While the earth remains,

Seedtime and harvest,

And cold and heat,

And summer and winter,

And day and night

Shall not cease.”

Psalms 104:1-9

PSALM 104

The Lords Care over All His Works.

1Bless the Lord, O my soul!

O Lord my God, You are very great;

You are clothed with splendor and majesty,

2Covering Yourself with light as with a cloak,

Stretching out heaven like a tent curtain.

3He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters;

He makes the clouds His chariot;

He walks upon the wings of the wind;

4He makes the winds His messengers,

Flaming fire His ministers.

5He established the earth upon its foundations,

So that it will not totter forever and ever.

6You covered it with the deep as with a garment;

The waters were standing above the mountains.

7At Your rebuke they fled,

At the sound of Your thunder they hurried away.

8The mountains rose; the valleys sank down

To the place which You established for them.

9You set a boundary that they may not pass over,

So that they will not return to cover the earth.

1 Peter 3:18-22

18For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; 19in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, 20who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. 21Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.

1) How do these texts show judgment giving way to order and mercy?

2) What does Peter mean by the flood “corresponding to” salvation?

3) Where is יהוה restoring order in your life?

Psalms 104:10-35

10He sends forth springs in the valleys;

They flow between the mountains;

11They give drink to every beast of the field;

The wild donkeys quench their thirst.

12Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell;

They lift up their voices among the branches.

13He waters the mountains from His upper chambers;

The earth is satisfied with the fruit of His works.

14He causes the grass to grow for the cattle,

And vegetation for the labor of man,

So that he may bring forth food from the earth,

15And wine which makes man’s heart glad,

So that he may make his face glisten with oil,

And food which sustains man’s heart.

16The trees of the Lord drink their fill,

The cedars of Lebanon which He planted,

17Where the birds build their nests,

And the stork, whose home is the fir trees.

18The high mountains are for the wild goats;

The cliffs are a refuge for the shephanim.

19He made the moon for the seasons;

The sun knows the place of its setting.

20You appoint darkness and it becomes night,

In which all the beasts of the forest prowl about.

21The young lions roar after their prey

And seek their food from God.

22When the sun rises they withdraw

And lie down in their dens.

23Man goes forth to his work

And to his labor until evening.

24O Lord, how many are Your works!

In wisdom You have made them all;

The earth is full of Your possessions.

25There is the sea, great and broad,

In which are swarms without number,

Animals both small and great.

26There the ships move along,

And Leviathan, which You have formed to sport in it.

27They all wait for You

To give them their food in due season.

28You give to them, they gather it up;

You open Your hand, they are satisfied with good.

29You hide Your face, they are dismayed;

You take away their spirit, they expire

And return to their dust.

30You send forth Your Spirit, they are created;

And You renew the face of the ground.

31Let the glory of the Lord endure forever;

Let the Lord be glad in His works;

32He looks at the earth, and it trembles;

He touches the mountains, and they smoke.

33I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;

I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.

34Let my meditation be pleasing to Him;

As for me, I shall be glad in the Lord.

35Let sinners be consumed from the earth

And let the wicked be no more.

Bless the Lord, O my soul.

Praise the Lord!

Amos 7:1-17

Warning Through Visions

1Thus the Lord God showed me, and behold, He was forming a locust-swarm when the spring crop began to sprout. And behold, the spring crop was after the king’s mowing. 2And it came about, when it had finished eating the vegetation of the land, that I said,

“Lord God, please pardon!

How can Jacob stand,

For he is small?”

3The Lord changed His mind about this.

“It shall not be,” said the Lord.

4Thus the Lord God showed me, and behold, the Lord God was calling to contend with them by fire, and it consumed the great deep and began to consume the farm land. 5Then I said,

“Lord God, please stop!

How can Jacob stand, for he is small?”

6The Lord changed His mind about this.

“This too shall not be,” said the Lord God.

7Thus He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing by a vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand. 8The Lord said to me, “What do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said,

“Behold I am about to put a plumb line

In the midst of My people Israel.

I will spare them no longer.

9The high places of Isaac will be desolated

And the sanctuaries of Israel laid waste.

Then I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”

Amos Accused, Answers

10Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is unable to endure all his words. 11For thus Amos says, ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’ ” 12Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Go, you seer, flee away to the land of Judah and there eat bread and there do your prophesying! 13But no longer prophesy at Bethel, for it is a sanctuary of the king and a royal residence.”

14Then Amos replied to Amaziah, “I am not a prophet, nor am I the son of a prophet; for I am a herdsman and a grower of sycamore figs. 15But the Lord took me from following the flock and the Lord said to me, ‘Go prophesy to My people Israel.’ 16Now hear the word of the Lord: you are saying, ‘You shall not prophesy against Israel nor shall you speak against the house of Isaac.’ 17Therefore, thus says the Lord, ‘Your wife will become a harlot in the city, your sons and your daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be parceled up by a measuring line and you yourself will die upon unclean soil. Moreover, Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’ ”

2 Chronicles 1:1-17

Solomon Worships at Gibeon

1Now Solomon the son of David established himself securely over his kingdom, and the Lord his God was with him and exalted him greatly.

2Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and to the judges and to every leader in all Israel, the heads of the fathers’ households. 3Then Solomon and all the assembly with him went to the high place which was at Gibeon, for God’s tent of meeting was there, which Moses the servant of the Lord had made in the wilderness. 4However, David had brought up the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim to the place he had prepared for it, for he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem. 5Now the bronze altar, which Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made, was there before the tabernacle of the Lord, and Solomon and the assembly sought it out. 6Solomon went up there before the Lord to the bronze altar which was at the tent of meeting, and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it.

7In that night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask what I shall give you.”

Solomon’s Prayer for Wisdom

8Solomon said to God, “You have dealt with my father David with great lovingkindness, and have made me king in his place. 9Now, O Lord God, Your promise to my father David is fulfilled, for You have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth. 10Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people, for who can rule this great people of Yours?” 11God said to Solomon, “Because you had this in mind, and did not ask for riches, wealth or honor, or the life of those who hate you, nor have you even asked for long life, but you have asked for yourself wisdom and knowledge that you may rule My people over whom I have made you king, 12wisdom and knowledge have been granted to you. And I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings who were before you has possessed nor those who will come after you.” 13So Solomon went from the high place which was at Gibeon, from the tent of meeting, to Jerusalem, and he reigned over Israel.

Solomon’s Wealth

14Solomon amassed chariots and horsemen. He had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horsemen, and he stationed them in the chariot cities and with the king at Jerusalem. 15The king made silver and gold as plentiful in Jerusalem as stones, and he made cedars as plentiful as sycamores in the lowland. 16Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue; the king’s traders procured them from Kue for a price. 17They imported chariots from Egypt for 600 shekels of silver apiece and horses for 150 apiece, and by the same means they exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Aram.
